The first rule of thumb for family history rookies: It's gonna take time and effort. In a perfect world, we would be
able to just type in a website and find our family's history already traced back to before Christ. In the real world, you
may find just enough to get you started on the web, but to really get in there...you will have to do research off the
web. Luckily, you may find someone who has already done the off web research and would be kind enough to share it with you,
but you have to know about how to ask for it.
For the most part, you will find that the genealogy web community is filled with helpful people who have such a love
and passion for family history that they want to share it for free of charge. After all, why should anyone have to pay for
a history they already own? Sorry, paid sites...thats just how I feel about it.
However, as kind and helpful as the community is, I have seen many rookies make it impossible for someone to help them
by not asking properly or made others not want to help them because of an attitude. So, here is a page I have put together
to give you some pointers on getting the most off the web.
